Charlotte Wessels is a Dutch singer and songwriter whose distinctive voice and genre-defying approach have established her as a singular presence in modern metal. Blending symphonic grandeur with progressive metal, alternative rock, electronic textures, and dark pop, she creates music that pairs cinematic soundscapes with intimate storytelling and emotional honesty.
Since embarking on her solo career in 2021, Wessels has developed an unmistakable artistic identity, culminating in The Obsession (2024), her first full-band studio album released via Napalm Records. Now, she is preparing to open a new chapter with Mute Swan Empire, her forthcoming album, set for release on February 5, 2027. The record will be followed by Wessels and her band, The Obsession, embarking on their first European headline tour, with Melissa Bonny joining as special guest.

Following the success of The Obsession, Wessels returns with Mute Swan Empire, a concept-driven album exploring the human responses to a world in crisis, from climate denial and social injustice to collective apathy, and the search for hope amid uncertainty. Through a cast of characters and archetypes, the record examines the contradictions, defence mechanisms, and moral compromises that shape our relationship with a changing world. Wessels approaches each record as a world of its own, where music, lyrics, imagery, and narrative work together to create a larger artistic vision.
Musically, the album continues the exploration of the space between heavy music and alternative influences, bringing together intricate arrangements, expansive atmospheres, powerful vocal performances and the band at its strongest. The musicians she first brought together for The Obsession have since taken on its name, growing into a close-knit live band through the past years of touring. That shared experience, combined with a more intensive production process with Joost van den Broek at Sandlane Studios, and Timo Somers going all-in on the arrangements, has helped the band’s collective identity takes centre stage, giving the album a more cohesive, band-driven sound, without sacrificing its dynamic range, moving between powerful, hard-hitting arrangements and moments of striking intimacy.

Released in September 2024, The Obsession marked a defining moment in Wessels’ solo career. A most personal work, the album explores her experiences with obsessive-compulsive disorder through songs that confront intrusive thoughts, fear, and the exhausting cycles of obsession. Combining raw vulnerability with ambitious, cinematic arrangements, it balances progressive and alternative influences with a renewed embrace of her symphonic metal roots.
The album received praise for its dynamic range, emotional depth, and compositional ambition. Ever Metal highlighted its “skyscraper melodies” and Wessels’ “masterful vocals,” while Blabbermouth praised its variety. Louder Sound described it as “an auspicious and metallicized spin on her dark fairytale aesthetic,” and Metal Sucks called it “a transcendent collection of moving yet forceful and complex compositions.”
The release brought Wessels and The Obsession to stages across Europe, including a support tour with VOLA in 2024 and festival appearances at Graspop, Hellfest, Tuska, Summer Breeze, and Dynamo in 2025. In early 2026, the band joined EPICA and AMARANTHE on the Arcane Dimensions Tour, performing at major venues across Europe and reaching new audiences along the way.

In 2005, at the age of 17, Wessels became the lead vocalist of Delain. During her sixteen years with the band, she appeared on six studio albums, from Lucidity (2006) to Apocalypse & Chill (2019), helping shape a sound that brought symphonic metal to audiences around the world. Her expressive vocals, powerful melodies, and narrative-driven lyrics became defining elements of the band’s identity.
Following her departure in 2021, Wessels began an independent creative chapter that gave her the freedom to explore a broader musical palette. Her first solo albums, Tales from Six Feet Under (2021) and Tales from Six Feet Under Vol. II (2022), were written and recorded in her basement home studio during the pandemic and shared directly with fans through Patreon. Drawing inspiration from horror, film, literature, and visual art, the releases moved freely between genres and established the foundations of her solo identity.
Wessels has also collaborated with artists including EPICA, Kamelot, and Textures, and contributed to the 2021 Qlimax Anthem alongside DJ Ran-D.
Community and creative independence
Based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, Wessels has cultivated a close relationship with her audience through Patreon, which she launched in 2020. With more than 3,000 patrons, the platform has grown into a thriving creative community built around an ongoing exchange of music, ideas, and behind-the-scenes insight into her artistic process. Her monthly Song of the Month series has resulted nearly 80 original songs, offering an ever-expanding glimpse into the breadth of her musical interests.
Beyond music, Wessels holds degrees in Art History and Gender Studies from Utrecht University. Her interests in art, storytelling, and the social structures that shape our lives inform both her creative work and her public platform, where she engages with subjects including mental health, equality, animal rights, and climate change. She is committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive community in which people can connect through music and feel free to be themselves.
With Mute Swan Empire, Wessels continues to build a body of work that is both deeply personal and outward-looking, unafraid to embrace complexity while searching for meaning in an uncertain world.
